Last week, my client told me she wanted to
be promoted to VP. So I asked, โWhy?โ
She hesitated. Then her eyes widened.
"๐๐ฆ๐ค๐ข๐ถ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ ๐ธ๐ข๐ฏ๐ต ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ท๐ข๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ค๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ณ."
But as we dug deeper, she realizedโฆ she didnโt know
exactly why. And sheโs not alone.
Many professionals chase the next title, salary
raise, or โsuccessโ milestoneโbecause
thatโs what theyโve been told to do.
I know, because Iโve been there too.
For years, I pursued things
I ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐จ๐ฉ๐ต I should want, only to achieve
them and wonderโฆ why am I still unfulfilled?
But hereโs what I learned:
If you donโt know why you want it,
you might not want it at all.
So how to gain clarity? Ask yourself 5 Whys.
Example 1: Chasing External Validation
1) Why do I want this promotion? โ A higher salary.
2) Why do I want a higher salary? โ More Recognition.
3) Why do I want recognition? โ To feel valued.
4) Why do I need to feel valued? โ To be successful.
5) Why does success define my worth? โ I fear Iโm not
enough without it.
Suddenly, the focus shifts from chasing titles
to building self-confidence.
Example 2: Seeking Meaning
1) Why do I want this promotion? โ Responsibility.
2) Why do I want responsibility? โ Lead decisions.
3) Why do I want to lead decisions? โ Create change.
4) Why does creating change matter? โ Feels right.
5) Why does it feel right? โ Aligned with my values.
Now, the real desire isnโt about a titleโitโs about purpose.
โ Sometimes external factors matter tooโmaybe you
need a higher salary to support your family. Thatโs
valid when youโre conscious of it.
But clarity on your โwhyโ changes everything!
It's never about the title.
So next time you set a career goal, ask yourself the
5 Whys. Because success isnโt about following
a scriptโitโs about defining it for yourself.
