Do you really want that promotion... or just think you ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ?

Last week, my client told me she wanted to
be promoted to VP. So I asked, โ€œWhy?โ€

She hesitated. Then her eyes widened.
"๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ."

But as we dug deeper, she realizedโ€ฆ she didnโ€™t know
exactly why. And sheโ€™s not alone.

Many professionals chase the next title, salary
raise, or โ€˜successโ€™ milestoneโ€”because
thatโ€™s what theyโ€™ve been told to do.

I know, because Iโ€™ve been there too.

For years, I pursued things
I ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต I should want, only to achieve
them and wonderโ€ฆ why am I still unfulfilled?

But hereโ€™s what I learned:

If you donโ€™t know why you want it,
you might not want it at all.

So how to gain clarity? Ask yourself 5 Whys.

Example 1: Chasing External Validation

1) Why do I want this promotion? โ†’ A higher salary.
2) Why do I want a higher salary? โ†’ More Recognition.
3) Why do I want recognition? โ†’ To feel valued.
4) Why do I need to feel valued? โ†’ To be successful.
5) Why does success define my worth? โ†’ I fear Iโ€™m not
enough without it.

Suddenly, the focus shifts from chasing titles
to building self-confidence.

Example 2: Seeking Meaning

1) Why do I want this promotion? โ†’ Responsibility.
2) Why do I want responsibility? โ†’ Lead decisions.
3) Why do I want to lead decisions? โ†’ Create change.
4) Why does creating change matter? โ†’ Feels right.
5) Why does it feel right? โ†’ Aligned with my values.

Now, the real desire isnโ€™t about a titleโ€”itโ€™s about purpose.

โ†’ Sometimes external factors matter tooโ€”maybe you
need a higher salary to support your family. Thatโ€™s
valid when youโ€™re conscious of it.

But clarity on your โ€˜whyโ€™ changes everything!

It's never about the title.

So next time you set a career goal, ask yourself the
5 Whys. Because success isnโ€™t about following
a scriptโ€”itโ€™s about defining it for yourself.
